Katie Thurston has come through one of the biggest moments in her cancer journey. The former Bachelorette star underwent a double mastectomy on April 29 — and her husband, stand-up comedian Jeff Arcuri, delivered the news fans had been anxiously waiting for: everything went great.
Arcuri updated followers throughout the day via Instagram Stories. First came a photo of Katie heading into surgery, along with a message that set the tone perfectly.
“This beautiful badass just went in for surgery for her double mastectomy. She is in amazing hands and spirits are high. I’ll be updating everyone as soon as I can.”
Hours later, the update Bachelor Nation had been holding its breath for:
“Katie is out of surgery and everything went great.”
Katie had already posted to Instagram herself before going under. “Today is surgery day! Thank you all for your support leading up to this. Your prayers, love, and positive energy have been the embrace I’ve needed over the last year. I still can’t believe I’m at this moment. Surgery is 3 hours. I look forward to waking up on the other side of this!”
The Road That Led Here
This moment has been over a year in the making. Katie starred as the lead on Season 17 of The Bachelorette in 2021. She discovered a lump herself in summer 2024, was diagnosed with Stage 3 invasive ductal carcinoma in February 2025 — a “triple-positive” diagnosis, meaning her tumor carried receptors for estrogen, progesterone, and the HER2 protein. Then, days after marrying Arcuri in an intimate backyard ceremony in March 2025, came the gut-punch: additional scans had found spots on her liver, pushing her diagnosis to Stage 4.
What followed was targeted treatments including Kisqali, Letrozole, and Lupron injections, IVF egg freezing, and a year of sharing the unvarnished emotional and physical realities of metastatic breast cancer with her followers. In March 2026, Katie announced a double mastectomy — a DMX — was scheduled for April 29. She had already rescheduled it once. She made clear she wasn’t moving it again.
She didn’t go the standard surgical route. Katie underwent a nipple-sparing double mastectomy with direct-to-implant reconstruction and also opted for nerve preservation — a procedure not covered by insurance, aimed at retaining sensation post-surgery. She called it out specifically for that reason.
“It’s not talked enough about how you lose your feeling/sensations. And I think this is a big piece for quality of life and feeling as most ‘me’ that I can.”
Recovery — Real and Unfiltered
Katie kept it completely real. Still in her hospital gown before surgery, she joked about the way it was sitting on her chest: “These are my new boobs actually.” A separate hospital video captured the moment Katie pointed out that Jeff had stayed overnight in a chair beside her bed. His response was simply: “That’s all I need.”
The couple was discharged on April 30, marking the moment with a photo of themselves outside holding a daisy. By May 1, Katie was back on Instagram with characteristic honesty — posting a photo of herself eating French fries, writing that the first 24 hours were “a blur,” and noting that she had been wrapped in bandages with drains. By day five post-op, she said she felt “way better than I expected” — noting that lymph nodes had been removed given her Stage 4 status, and that she was hoping to have her drains out by May 7 before flying back to New York City.
She also paid out-of-pocket for hyperbaric oxygen therapy sessions, one before surgery and one after, to support healing. She recommended it to anyone facing a similar procedure.
Jeff Arcuri — The Husband Bachelor Nation Didn’t Know It Needed
Arcuri — who Katie met through Instagram in spring 2024 and got engaged to in September of that year — has been an unwavering presence throughout. He previously announced he’d donate $1 from every ticket sold on his fall comedy tour to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. The guy proposed, married her in a backyard ceremony one month after a Stage 3 diagnosis, helped freeze embryos, and is now sleeping in hospital chairs. Bachelor Nation has fully adopted him.
Katie put it plainly in her May 1 post: “The biggest shoutout to my amazing husband Jeff Arcuri who continues to love me softly and gently and be by my side through this chapter.”
Next up is drain removal and the flight home to NYC to continue her recovery.
