Hannah Harper has won American Idol Season 24. The 25-year-old stay-at-home mom from Willow Springs, Missouri claimed the title during the live season finale — which aired May 12, 2026, on ABC and Disney+ — with Ryan Seacrest making the announcement in front of a confetti-filled studio. Jordan McCullough finished as runner-up. Keyla Richardson took third.
Harper immediately broke down in tears. She later told reporters she “couldn’t stop crying” and that she nearly missed the confetti drop entirely. “I didn’t know the confetti was falling because I was weeping,” she said, “and when I opened my eye there was like a star stuck in my eyelash.”
How the Finale Played Out
The two-plus-hour finale ran in three rounds. All three remaining contestants opened by performing songs from guest mentor Alicia Keys — her first Idol appearance since Season 9 in 2010. Harper chose “No One” and put a distinctly folksy, bluegrass spin on it. Judge Lionel Richie didn’t hold back: “You’ve taken an Alicia Keys song and turned it into your song so fast, only because you have that identifiable voice that we’ve all come to love.”
Round two was hometown songs. Harper performed “Married Into This Town,” an original rooted in her life in Willow Springs. That round ended with the elimination of Keyla Richardson — a music teacher from Pensacola, Florida — setting up a Harper vs. McCullough finale.
The final round brought both contestants back to their audition songs. Harper returned to “String Cheese,” the original bluegrass gospel track she wrote while dealing with postpartum depression after the birth of her youngest son. McCullough sang “Goodness of God” and earned a standing ovation. It wasn’t enough.
The Song That Started It All
Harper’s audition defined the season. She walked in wearing a colorful patchwork dress she sewed herself and sang “String Cheese” — a deeply personal song about postpartum depression — to a stunned judging panel. Judge Carrie Underwood called it “the most relatable song I think I’ve heard.” The clip racked up more than 120 million views across platforms, making Harper an early frontrunner before a single live vote was cast.
The finale aired just one day after Mother’s Day. That timing gave Harper’s win an added emotional weight that wasn’t lost on anyone in the room — or watching at home.
A Historic Win
Harper is the first female country winner since Carrie Underwood took Season 4 back in 2005. She’s also only the second Idol winner to audition with an original song, after Caleb Johnson in Season 13. Underwood — now a judge — was visibly emotional when the result was announced. “I love that you started your journey on American Idol with an original song, and I love that you’re ending it that way, as well, taking us home,” she said through tears.
This season marked the ninth year on the panel for both Luke Bryan and Richie, and Underwood’s second as a judge. Bryan kept it simple after Harper’s finale performance: “You’re a true artist.”
A Stacked Finale Night
The finale drew Brad Paisley, Jason Mraz, Nelly, Clay Aiken, and Lee Ann Womack — who shared the stage with Harper herself. Shinedown performed alongside Top 11 contestant Philmon Lee, who had previously wowed Underwood with his take on the band’s cover of “Simple Man.”
What’s Next for Hannah Harper
As Season 24 champion, Harper takes home a record deal. She’s already announced the “String Cheese” tour, with nearly two dozen dates on the books, and has teased plans for new original music. She told Entertainment Tonight: “Everybody’s let me know that I have a voice to be heard and I have a lot to say, so I’m very excited about that.”
Christian artist Chris Tomlin jumped on social media to congratulate her, writing: “Huge congrats on winning American Idol… I love hearing you sing At The Cross!! Let’s sing it together sometime!” — a collaboration that, based on the response, a lot of people would show up for.
American Idol Season 24 is streaming now on Hulu and will be eligible for the 2026 Emmy Awards.
