Status: CLOSED (May 2018)
Note: “The Local” was the name Jon Taffer gave to Blue Frog 22 during Bar Rescue. For the full story, see our article on Blue Frog 22.

Blue Frog 22 Becomes The Local
The Local was a Chicago, Illinois bar that started life as Blue Frog 22 before appearing on Bar Rescue Season 1, Episode 6 (“The Blue Frog Sings The Blues”). Jon Taffer transformed the confused concept into a focused neighborhood bar and renamed it The Local.
The Transformation
Before Bar Rescue, Blue Frog 22’s décor was compared to a carnival – board games everywhere, bright colors, no clear identity. Owner Mimi’s involvement in every decision was holding the bar back. Her son John needed space to lead.
Taffer’s intervention created a proper neighborhood bar. The owners compromised on the name, calling it “Blue Frog’s Local 22” – a blend of old and new.
Seven Years of Success
The Local/Blue Frog’s Local 22 survived for seven years after filming – a remarkable run by Bar Rescue standards. Before the show, they sold burgers and beer for $6 total. After, they charged $15 for a burger and $8 for a beer while keeping customers happy.
Why It Closed
The bar closed in May 2018 when owner Mimi decided to retire. Construction at a neighboring property had prevented them from opening their patio, causing losses of over $120,000. After a good run, it was time to move on.
The location at 22 E Hubbard St in Chicago has remained vacant, with commercial listings showing rent around $11,000 monthly.
