The Cambridge Hotel Ohio Could Not Compete

Status: CLOSED

The Cambridge Hotel in Cambridge, Ohio appeared on Hotel Hell with Gordon Ramsay. This historic property in southeastern Ohio had deep roots in the community but was struggling to stay relevant in the modern hospitality market.

A Historic Property

Cambridge, Ohio sits along the old National Road (US Route 40), once a major thoroughfare for American travelers. The Cambridge Hotel was built during the era when such roadside hotels thrived on highway traffic.

But times changed. Interstate 70 diverted traffic away from downtown Cambridge, and the hotel lost its natural customer base.

Gordon Ramsay’s Assessment

When Gordon Ramsay arrived, he found a hotel frozen in time – and not in a charming, nostalgic way. The property needed significant updates to compete with modern chain hotels along the interstate.

Problems Identified

  • Outdated rooms that didn’t meet modern expectations
  • Restaurant service issues
  • Marketing that failed to attract travelers
  • Competition from newer hotels near I-70

The Aftermath

Despite Gordon Ramsay’s intervention, The Cambridge Hotel couldn’t overcome the fundamental challenge of its location and the changing travel industry. The property eventually closed.

Small-town historic hotels face an uphill battle against chain properties with modern amenities and interstate access.
