Amigo Cafe – Restaurant Impossible Navajo Nation Update (OPEN)

Status: OPEN

Amigo Cafe in Kayenta, Arizona is one of Restaurant Impossible’s most unique episodes – a family restaurant on the Navajo Reservation that’s been serving the community since 1983. After Robert Irvine’s intervention, revenue jumped 53% and the owners are now planning a second location.

Four Decades on the Navajo Nation

Amigo Cafe was established in 1983, making it a true institution in Kayenta. Owners Julene and Larry Price have run it with their family for around 22 years, serving a unique blend of Mexican, Native American, and American food that reflects the community they serve.

The restaurant’s location near Monument Valley makes it a stop for tourists, but its heart is serving the Navajo community.

The Episode (Season 22, Episode 2)

Robert Irvine traveled to Arizona’s Navajo Reservation to help a struggling family. Owner Julene had lost all her savings trying to keep the restaurant afloat, and the stress was destroying her health. She wanted her daughter Heather to take over, but the transition wasn’t happening.

Honoring Navajo Culture

The three-day renovation was described as “like art” by the Navajo Times. Robert designed a coffee bar with earth and turquoise colors to honor Navajo culture – not imposing an outside aesthetic, but celebrating where the restaurant exists.

This attention to cultural context sets the Amigo Cafe episode apart from typical Restaurant Impossible renovations.

Dramatic Results

The transformation was remarkable:

  • Revenue increased 53%
  • Heather took over scheduling and payroll
  • Julene cut her schedule to one day per week
  • Her health is improving
  • Larry is planning a second Amigo Cafe in Farmington, NM

Going from near-closure to planning expansion is the ultimate Restaurant Impossible success story.

Current Reviews

Amigo Cafe enjoys mostly positive feedback for food, service, and the refreshed atmosphere. The restaurant continues to draw both locals and tourists visiting Monument Valley.

The combination of Mexican, Native American, and American food remains the draw – authentic flavors you can’t find anywhere else.
