The Episode

The oddly named Grasshopper Also was an Irish pub and family restaurant located at 645 Washington Ave in Carlstadt, NJ. Married couple Mitch and Maureen Sandler had purchased the place 17 years earlier with Maureen’s father, Chief, who had decades of restaurant experience.

When Gordon Ramsay arrived, he found a failing restaurant where no one seemed to know exactly why business had declined. The night’s service was canceled from the start due to contamination issues. Staff spent the evening throwing out contaminated food and deep cleaning the kitchen.

Gordon’s Intervention

Gordon pushed for cleaner operations and updated menus. He worked with the staff to improve food safety standards and service quality. The intervention addressed the immediate problems and gave the restaurant a fresh start.

After Filming

Soon after filming, the owners fired Chef Mario and kept Chef James on to continue training staff. Reviews on Yelp and TripAdvisor were mostly positive following the episode, with compliments for most menu items.

The Closure

Grasshopper Also closed in October 2012, about a year and a half after the episode aired. The restaurant was sold to new owners who transformed it into Eastside Ale House, a sports bar. That venue also closed in 2016, followed by Primetime Sports Lounge & Restaurant, which lasted only about a year.

What’s There Now

As of 2022, the location is occupied by Segovia Meson, a Spanish tapas restaurant that has received solid reviews (4 stars on Yelp, 4.4 on Google).
