Starkweather Family Tulsa Oklahoma Property Dispute

Status: FAMILY OWNED (Legal Issues)

The Starkweather family’s Tulsa, Oklahoma makeover led to an unusual controversy when their neighbors sued over the new construction. As someone who follows these cases, I can say this one really stood out as different from the usual financial troubles.

The Lawsuit

Neighbors filed a lawsuit in 2010 claiming that the new home’s fence, retaining wall, and air-conditioning units encroached approximately four feet onto their property. This was one of the few Extreme Makeover controversies that didn’t involve the recipient family directly.

Construction Issues

The rapid 7-day construction timeline that made for great television apparently didn’t allow for careful property line surveys. The resulting legal dispute highlighted potential issues with the show’s breakneck building pace. Probably should have led with this: speed and accuracy don’t always mix.

Resolution

The case illustrated that even when families managed to keep their homes, the show could create problems for the surrounding neighborhood. The Starkweathers themselves were caught in the middle of a dispute they didn’t create. That’s what makes their situation particularly frustrating and endearing to us as observers.
